Move your messages to a new phone

Your message history follows you to a new phone of the same kind. Moving between iPhone and Android needs your recovery code.

To a new phone of the same kind

iPhone to iPhone, or Android to Android: sign in with the same method, and your message history comes back on its own. No code is needed.

Between iPhone and Android

Before you switch, save your recovery code. “Save this code before switching between Apple and Android devices — it's the only way to restore old messages once your old device is gone.”

  1. On your current phone, go to Me, then Settings, then Manage Account.
  2. Under Message backup, tap View recovery code.
  3. Tap Copy and keep the code somewhere safe, such as a password manager. Then tap Done.

On the new phone, sign in. When Rijjin shows Restore your messages, enter the code and tap Restore.

If you tapped Not now, you can restore later: Me, then Settings, then Manage Account, then Restore message history.

If someone else saw your code

Tap Regenerate code under Message backup. The old code stops working, and Rijjin shows the new one. Save it somewhere safe.

If it doesn’t work

  • “That doesn't look like a valid recovery code.” Check the code. Dashes, spaces and capital letters don’t matter.
  • “Couldn't restore with that code — check it and try again.” Make sure it’s the newest code. If you regenerated it, the old one no longer works.
  • If you’ve lost the code but your old phone is still signed in, view the code there.
